This fully-machined coupon mold is a hand-held device designed to provide spectro-chemical analysis coupons from molten non-ferrous alloys in seconds. The molten metal enters the center of the coupon mold producing a mushroom shaped coupon with totally homogeneous element distribution. This enables the spectrometer operator to sample the entire coupon surface. The old book mold method permitted sample burns only fifty percent of the coupon surface.
The main advantage to the mold being completely self-contained is that it permits the operator to pour the metal into the riser area of the mold and, after solidification, to strike the shear arm on a solid surface, shearing the gate from the coupon. With the mold opened, the coupon is then removed and is ready for machining.
